Harry Kane scored a penalty on Saturday to help England beat Switzerland in a friendly match at the Wembley Stadium. With the 78th-minute strike, the captain is now on level with Bobby Charlton in second place on the all-time national men’s scoring chart.

Kane has scored 49 goals in 69 appearances for England. His tally leaves him four strikes behind from levelling with Wayne Rooney, who hit 53 goals in 120 international games before retiring in 2017.

Kane has played a key role for England in their last two major finals. The Tottenham Hostspur striker netted six goals in the 2018 World Cup and won the tournament’s Golden Boot. He scored four at the EURO 2020 last year where the Three Lions lost to Italy in the final.

“There’s definitely an expectation on us now. The final from the summer still hurts, it still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth so for sure it gives you more hunger and fire in the belly to go one step further in a major tournament,” Kane explained in the build-up to Saturday’s clash.

“It feels like we are improving every year and this year is no different. We are really taking big strides into becoming one of the best teams in the history of the England national team.”
