Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bowler Harshal
Patel
entered an elite list on Sunday, taking his maiden Indian Premier League
(IPL) hat-trick against defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) to enter the history
books and help his side to a 54-run win.

Patel took four wickets in the match, with all of
them coming from off-cutters. The 30-year-old dismissed Hardik Pandya, Kieron
Pollard and Rahul Chahar in consecutive deliveries of the 17th over
to effectively end Mumbai’s diminishing chances of mounting a late charge to
chase down the 166-run target in Dubai. He also dismissed Adam Milne with his first
delivery of the 19th to put Mumbai out of their misery.

Patel, who was already the Purple cap holder
before the match, further cemented his place at the top of the wicket-taking
charts as his four scalps on Sunday took him to 23, eight clear of second-placed
Avesh Khan of Delhi Capitals. MI’s Jasprit Bumrah is third on the list with 14.

Patel’s hat-trick was the 20th
instance a bowler took three wickets in three deliveries in the tournament’s
history since its inception in 2008. From Lakshmipathy Balaji to Rohit Sharma,
