The marquee T20 World Cup clash between India and Pakistan is expected to be held on October 24,. The official schedule of the tournament will be released by ICC in a few days.
It has been learnt that the ICC normally keeps two to three sets of schedule before zeroing in on the final one. ICC tends to look at two to three schedules before deciding on the the final one. However, the match is highly anticipated on a weekend, considering the traction an Indo-Pak rivalry generates.
"As of now, Sunday, October 24 looks the likely option as the first week's Qualifying round matches starting October 17 will be held in Muscat, Oman," a source told PTI under anonymity.
"So when the main round robin fixtures are played, it is better to start with an Indo-Pak game which will have the best TRP."
India and Pakistan are slotted in Group 2 along with the World Test Championship winners New Zealand and Afghanistan.
Group 1 includes defending champions West Indies, former winners Australia, England and South Africa.
According to the International Cricket Council, Super 12 groups have been selected based on team rankings as of March 20, 2021.
BCCI has the hosting rights for the T20 World Cup. However, the tournament will be played in Oman and the UAE due to the ongoing COVID pandemic. IPL 2021 was suspended in the wake of positive COVID cases in bio-bubbles in Ahmedabad and New Delhi earlier in May. The remaining tournament will be held in the UAE in September-October ahead of the T20 World Cup.
The Indian cricket team is not lined up for any international T20I series before the T20 World Cup. Following the end of the Test series on September 14, the players will head to the UAE for IPL 2021.
