The future of Indian cricket is secure as Rahul
Dravid
not only brings a wealth of experience but also impeccable work
ethic that set him apart during his playing days, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar
has said.

Dravid, 48, was on Wednesday announced as
India’s next head coach. The former Indian captain will replace
Ravi Shastri, who will step down from the role following the ongoing T20 World
Cup
.

“Indian cricket should be going ahead and
ahead. He will bring his vast experience, the work ethic that he embodied when
he played the game, the deep thinking about tactics and so on,” Gavaskar told India
Today.

A 66-run win over Afghanistan on Wednesday ensured India
kept their outside chances of making the semi-finals alive. India are fourth in
the Super 12 Group 2 standings, behind leaders Pakistan, Afghanistan and New
Zealand. Virat Kohli’s men will have to beat Scotland and Namibia by big
margins and hope Afghanistan upset the Kiwis in order to sneak into the top two
places.

Gavaskar said that the remaining two
matches can help Dravid assess a few things in order to chart his plans for the
future.

“You need to have some instinctiveness during matches but you also need
to be able to plan and I think this and the win over Afghanistan is probably
the best news Indian cricket has had over the last one week or so,” said
Gavaskar.

“After this tournament is over, you’ve
got to have a new coach and the earlier he is appointed, the better it is
because he will also get time to plan.”

“There are still two more matches that
India have to play. Right now, it is time for Dravid to take stock of the
situation after watching the matches and he will then decide what is best for
Indian cricket,” added the respected analyst.
