The Indian Super League’s 2021/22 season will commence on November 19 with a clash between ATK Mohun Bagan, the runners up of last year’s competition and Kerala Blasters, two times ISL champions.

Defending champions Mumbai City FC will begin their campaign against FC Goa on November 22 and will be hoping to put a foot in the right direction with a win.

Much like the last season strict protocols are in place and the players will be staying in bio bubbles throughout the tournament. All the eleven teams will play their matches on three grounds in one state (Fatorda, Tilak Maidan and Bombolim in Goa).

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Limited have chosen to adopt the Asian Football Confederation’s 4 overseas players per eleven rule without the AFC’s mandatory regional player component.

Until last season, five overseas players were allowed in the line up and the new guidelines are expected to have a big impact on the way that the teams will set up. The Indian players will be getting more opportunities, a plus for Indian football.

The teams participating in this season’s ISL are Mumbai City, NorthEast United, Kerala Blasters, Odisha, Goa, Chennaiyin FC, Bengaluru, Jamshedpur FC, SC East Bengal, Hyderabad and ATK Mohun Bagan.

History of the ISL

While football has been played in the country ever since the game first arrived in the nineteenth century, the country’s first nationwide football league did not commence until 1996.

For the first three seasons the ISL was not recognised by the official governing body for football in Asia, the AFC and FIFA the world governing body.

Much like the Indian Premier League, the ISL has an ownership model where the teams are owned by prominent businessmen as well as celebrity owners from Bollywood and cricket.
