Ravindra Jadeja has been appointed the new
captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the forthcoming season of IPL after MS
Dhoni stepped down from the role just ahead of the season opener. CSK will take
on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2022 opener on Saturday.

After taking up the new role, Jadeja shared his
first thoughts released by CSK on their social media channels. Jadeja, who
joined CSK set up in 2012, became one of their mainstays under the leadership
of Dhoni.

 “Feeling
good but at the same time I need to fill in big boots,” said Jadeja in his
first reaction to being appointed captain of a heavyweight franchise.

“Like Mahi bhai has already set a big legacy
and we need to carry it forward, so hopefully I will. And I don’t need to worry
too much because he’s here and whatever question I need to ask, I’ll definitely
go to him.”

“He was my go to person and he still is today,
so I’m not worried too much. And thank you for all your wishes and love,” he
added.

Jadeja is the second full-time captain of CSK
after Dhoni.

Under Dhoni’s leadership, CSK won the IPL
titles four times which is the second most to Mumbai Indians’ five titles. CSK
are the defending champions.

After MS Dhoni stepped down on Thursday, the
franchise’s CEO Kasi Viswanathan said he took the decision in the best interest
of CSK. He also said that new captain Ravindra Jadeja will have a guide in
Dhoni during the campaign in the upcoming season and it will work as a good
combination.

“See, it is a decision which he has taken
looking at the best interest of CSK. Whatever MS Dhoni does, he takes CSK’s
best interests into account. We are happy with whatever decision he takes. He
is handing the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja, Dhoni will be playing with the
team so the bonding will be there,” Kasi Viswanathan was quoted as saying
by NDTV.

Talking about Jadeja’s appointment as a captain,
Viswanathan said, “See, Ravindra Jadeja is probably the best all-rounder
right now. He has been with the team and he knows the team culture. He is
capable of handling, with Dhoni being there, Jadeja will always have a guiding
force behind him. I think it will be a good combination.”
