After displaying a gun at a strip club earlier this month, Ja Morant has recently received an 8-game suspension. His actions were irresponsible, reckless, and potentially very dangerous, according to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

Since a defeat to the Denver Nuggets on March 3, the star player for the Memphis Grizzlies had been absent from the roster as the league looked into a social media video that showed the point guard brandishing a gun inside a nightclub.

In response, the league has now decided to suspend Morant for eight games without pay for “behavior detrimental to the league,” according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. When the squad plays the Dallas Mavericks on March 20, Morant will be able to make a comeback.

Today, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Morant had a meeting in the NBA’s New York offices to talk about Morant’s behavior. Among those present at the meeting were NBPA Executive Director Tamika Tremaglio, NBA Executive Vice President and Head of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars, and others.

The event on March 4 was looked into by the league administration. The league was unable to determine from the material gathered throughout the investigation whether Morant owned the pistol in question, had taken it inside the club or had ever shown it for more than a few seconds.

Moreover, the inquiry did not reveal that Morant had the pistol while traveling with the team or within any NBA facilities, and the Colorado authorities did not discover enough proof to charge Morant.

“Ja’s conduct was irresponsible, reckless, and potentially very dangerous,” said Silver.  “It also has serious consequences given his enormous following and influence, particularly among young fans who look up to him.  He has expressed sincere contrition and remorse for his behavior.  Ja has also made it clear to me that he has learned from this incident and that he understands his obligations and responsibility to the Memphis Grizzlies and the broader NBA community extend well beyond his play on the court.”
