Jasprit Bumrah registered his best T20 figures, 5/10, against Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. This was the Indian pacer’s first fifer in the IPL but came in a losing cause. The Mumbai Indians faced a 52-run defeat against Shreyas Iyer and co.
Bumrah was almost unplayable against KKR. The 28-year-old mixed his spell with spicy bouncers, fuller on-to-stumps deliveries and several slower ones to fox the batters. Some of the best in the Kolkata lineup – Nitish Rana, Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, Sheldon Jackson and Sunil Narine – were amongst the MI pacer’s victims.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled one over in the powerplay, in which he gave five runs, and then was brought back to complete his spell after the 14th. First ball back into the attack, the Mumbai mainstay got rid of the dangerous-looking Andre Russell. In the same over he dismissed a well-set Nitish Rana.
Bumrah then delivered a triple wicket-maiden in the 18th over. He bowled the 20th, giving one run. With the help of the star bowler’s spell, Mumbai Indians were able to contain Kolkata Knight Riders, who were flying at one point, to 165/9.
However, some poor batting let Mumbai down and they face their eighth loss this season.
Bumrah, on Twitterm reflected on his personal achievement and the team’s loss.
“Disappointed with last night’s result but a memorable evening nevertheless,” the 28-year-old tweeted along with a photos of the match ball and him celebrating during the match.
With the five-wicket haul, he now has 10 wickets in 11 games this season. He has bowled at an average of 25.40 and economy rate of 7.41 rpo.
“Always a good feeling to contribute but the important thing is for the team to win. We had our chance to do that but couldn’t get it done. That’s the way it is. I don’t keep track of figures or goals, my aim is to stick to the process. Sometimes you bowl well but don’t get wickets. Can’t get desperate. Just want to contribute in whatever way I can. Well, it’s about rectifying our mistakes and doing better next season,” he said after being named the player of the match.
