Jeff Gladney, a cornerback for NFL side Arizona Cardinals, died on Monday in a car crash in Dallas, Texas.

The 25-year-old athlete’s death was confirmed by his agent, as well as the team, who put out a statement, saying, “We are devastated to learn of Jeff Gladney’s passing. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all who are mourning this tremendous loss.”

“We are asking prayers for the family and privacy at this most difficult time,” Gladney’s agent Brian Overstreet said in a statement.

While too many details aren’t available at the moment, according to KTVT-TV, the crash took place on the service road of Woodall Rodgers Freeway in Dallas, and left another person dead. The identity of the other deceased, at the time of writing this, was unclear.

Gladney’s short career began at the Texas Christian University (TCU), where he played for four seasons and made his name as an extraordinary cornerback before moving to the NFL.

In 2020, Gladney was a first-round draft pick of NFL side Minnesota Vikings. Gladney played 16 games for the Vikings, but was dropped after he was accused of assaulting a woman.

However, the 25-year-old was not found guilty of the charges, and was signed by the Cardinals subsequently.

Gladney’s death is the latest piece of tragedy to befall the NFL, which lost another player, Dwayne Haskins of the Pittsburgh Steelers, recently. An autopsy report released last week revealed that Haskins had been drunk and was on drugs when he was fatally hit by a truck while walking the streets near Fort Lauderdale in Florida last month.
