Dallas held the 17th pick in the first round of the 1985 NFL Draft, while San Francisco, the Super Bowl champion the year before, received the last pick. Bill Walsh, the 49ers coach, approached Rice after seeing Rice’s college performances on television highlights.

Walsh “saw the deep danger the 49ers lacked, a player who could blow a game wide open with one play.” The first and third-round picks of the New England Patriots were exchanged for the first, second, and third-round picks of the 49ers.

Rice was selected by the 49ers with the No. 16 overall pick before the Cowboys had a chance.

Starting from 1985, Rice was a regular in the 49ers squad. He had a long 15 years career with them before moving on to Oakland Raiders and then Seattle Seahawks. His retirement from NFL took place after a brief final stint with the Denver Broncos.

He received recognition from the NFL by being named to the league’s All-Decade Teams for the 1980s and 1990s, as well as its 75th and 100th Anniversary All-Time Teams.
