The Cleveland Browns have named Jim Schwartz as their new defensive coordinator.

After firing Joe Woods, Cleveland launched its defensive coordinator search a week ago. In addition to Schwartz, the Steelers’ linebackers coach Brian Flores, the Seahawks’ associate head coach Sean Desai, and the Eagles’ defensive pass game coordinator/defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson were among the candidates. From 2001 until 2008, Schwartz was the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans.

Schwartz was under consideration for a number of head coaching positions in the NFL while he was working with Tennessee. In 2005, he ran for the head coaching post of the San Francisco 49ers, but Mike Nolan ultimately won the position.

On January 15, 2009, Adam Schefter announced that the Detroit Lions had chosen to employ Schwartz as their head coach. Schwartz’s first year in charge of Detroit resulted in a 2-14 record, with victories over the Cleveland Browns and the Washington Redskins.

Despite having a 2-10 record at the start of the 2010 season under Schwartz, his Lions went on to win four straight games against the Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, and Minnesota Vikings.

The Buffalo Bills hired Schwartz as their defensive coordinator on January 24, 2014. In terms of statistics, Schwartz’s defence was one of the best in the NFL and was first in sacks.

The Philadelphia Eagles hired Schwartz on January 19, 2016, to serve as coach Doug Pederson’s defensive coordinator.
