There is no
such thing as a friendly match in Jose Mourinho’s dictionary and the new Roma
boss proved this as a fact when he received a red card in the pre-season defeat
against La Liga side Real Betis on Saturday.
Mourinho is
never shy in sharing his opinions, but this time, the referee deemed it over the
line and he was sent to the dressing room alongside Lorenzo Pellegrini for
storming onto the pitch to contest a decision.
Roma
finished the game with just 8 players on the pitch as they were handed a 5-2
defeat by Betis.
The
incident happened when the game was tied at 2-2. Alex Moreno found himself with
the goal at his mercy after a defensive howler by Roger Ibanez, but the
Spaniard slipped as he went for the ball and ended up rolling it over the line
in a bizarre manner.

The Roma
players swarmed the referee with Mourinho joining his team in the effort to
convince the official that Moreno had used his left arm in his effort. The referee
refused to disallow the effort and all hell broke loose on the pitch.
Pellegrini and Mourinho were sent off and it proved catastrophic for the team.
Two further
players, Gianluca Mancini and Rick Karsdop, also saw red to leave the Italians
with eight on the pitch, while Betis took full advantage to net two further
goals and thrash their adversaries 5-2.
It was the
third time this pre-season that Roma players were involved in an on-pitch
confrontation so fans can expect a lot more of these from the firebrand coach
and his team.
