Despite Barcelona’s misfortunes of late, Juventus striker Alvaro Morata is still haunted by his side’s loss against the Blaugrana in the 2015 UEFA Champions League final, and feels that the existence of VAR back in 2015 would have changed the outcome of the match.

Opening up about his feelings about the final that saw Luis Enrique’s men lift the UCL trophy after a 3-1 win over Allegri’s Juventus, the 29-year-old Spaniard told DAZN, “With VAR, Juve would have won the final against Barca.”

“I always think that, with VAR, they would have given us a penalty and we would have one more Champions League at Juventus. Life is like that,” Morata added.

The incident being referred to took place in the 67th minute of the UCL final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

While Barcelona opened the scoring in the 4th minute through Ivan Rakitic, Juventus got back into the game in the second half through a Morata equaliser in the 55th minute.

Morata’s goal resulted in a momentary change in the momentum of the game, and Juventus, pressing for their second goal, were nearly rewarded when Paul Pogba was brought down in the Barcelona box by Dani Alves.

Juventus players, understandably, loudly appealed for a spot kick, but the referee waved away the Italian team’s appeals. Two minutes later, Luis Suarez scored for Barcelona, giving the Blaugrana a crucial lead that would help them see out the rest of the match in relative comfort.

Morata’s grievances are perhaps not unfounded: replays clearly showed that Alves made no attempt to play the ball when bringing down Pogba, and it may well have been given a penalty had VAR been around back then.
