Kieron Pollard on Wednesday announced retirement from international cricket. The 34-year-old represented West Indies for 15 years, playing 123 ODI and 101 T20I matches. But the limited overs skipper never played a Test.

Pollard never getting a Test call-up, even when West Indies were struggling during most part of the last decade, is still a mystery. the Mumbai Indians mainstay has a fine first class record. In 27 matches at the level, he scored 1584 runs at an average of more than 37. The Tacarigua born player also took 14 wickets, which made him a good all-round option.

England legend David Gower had in 2020 termed him one of the best T20 players but said he is not good enough to play Test cricket.

“Kieron Pollard is one of the world’s best T20 players but he knows as well as I do that he cannot play test cricket, he isn’t good enough to play test cricket.” Gower said in conversation on SportsTiger’s show “Off-the-Field”.

 In March 2015, Pollard announced that he was taking an indefinite break from first-class cricket. Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) Cricket officials at the time stated that the all-rounder said ‘stress and strain of the four-day cricket was taking a toll on his body’.

Annoucing his decision to retire in a video posted on social media, Pollard said,” “After careful deliberation, I have today decided to retire from international cricket. As is the case for many young persons, it was a dream of mine to represent the West Indies team from the time I was a boy of 10 years and I am proud to have represented West Indies cricket for over 15 years in both the T20i and ODI forms of the game.”
