French football star Kylian Mbappe was seen repeatedly rebuffing the efforts of his nation’s President Emmanuel Macron to console him following Argentina’s historic win in the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.

Despite Mbappe scoring a hat-trick in the World Cup final,

Argentina beat France 4-2 in a penalty shootout. This left Mbappe in disbelief and heartbroken and he was seen sitting on his own on the field, away from his teammates, trying to come to terms with the bitter reality. That is when he was interrupted by Macron, with the French President trying to lift the forward off the pitch and gripping his arm.

Mbappe refused to make any eye contact with his country’s leader and did not seem to be particularly interested in being consoled by Macron at that moment. However, Macron did not give up and again attempted to console Mbappe during the post-match presentation, when the PSG star was awarded with his runners-up medal and Golden Boot.

Needless to say, the netizens broke into an open mockery of the lack of reaction from Mbappe and Macron’s constant attempts to console the footballer.

“Mbappe should consider getting a restraining order against Macron,” one of them said, while another noted, “Wild to hear Macron say ‘keep politics out of football’ then watch him bear-hugging Mbappé as if he was drowning and Mbappé was driftwood.” One more quipped, “Mbappe pulling away from Macron as he tried to console him and then trying to take the medal from his hands rather than allowing Macron to put it on him is a VIBE.”

One fan remarked, “Gotta feel for Mbappé – first you lose to penalties, then you’re consoled by Macron.” One more said, “Macron is utterly desperate for a reaction from Mbappe but in three major efforts, the striker gives him no eye contact, and no photo opportunity.” Another commented, “Find yourself someone who looks at you the way Macron looks at Mbappe.”

Macron told RMC Sport, after the match: “It’s extraordinary what Mbappé did, but the whole team. Mbappe is a great player but he’s young. I told him he’s only 23, he was the World Cup top scorer, he’s won a World Cup, he’s been to a final. I was as sad as him. I told him he’d made us very proud, and in the end we’ve lost a football match, we came so close. That’s how it is in sport.”
