While Lionel Messi failed to hit the mark in his second full game with the Parisian club, another Argentine, in Mauro Icardi, came to Paris Saint-Germain‘s rescue as his 94th-minute header secured a 2-1 victory against Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday.

In the round 6 fixture of Ligue 1, PSG went down against Lyon just after the breakthrough a Lucas Paqueta goal. However, after conceding the goal, the Parisian club upped the ante to claw back into the game. Neymar Jr. was brought down in the penalty box in the 66th minute and the Brazilian himself stepped up to take the spot-kick. He calmly nudged it past Anthony Lopes in the goal.

However, the match looked set for a stalemate but the capital city club had some other plan. Kylian Mbappe, who had earlier been booed by the home crowd, rose to the occasion and set up second-half substitute Icardi with a looping cross, who calmly placed it into the goal and sealed the tie in the 93rd minute.

With the attacking trio of Messi, Neymar and Mbappe starting together for the second time and the first time along with Angel Di Maria, Mauricio Pochettino hoped for a smoother transition in the attack but throughout the first half, Lyon were able to keep the incredible quartet at bay.

In the first 45 minutes, Lyon enjoyed more shots on target although PSG had the greater possession. However, after the break, Lyon started with more intent as Karl Toko Ekambi set up Paqueta in the box and the former AC Milan player smacked it home past new signing Gianluigi Donnarumma.

But PSG almost reacted immediately, tightening the defence. In the other end, Neymar won the penalty and tucked it home to tie the scores.

Meanwhile, Messi stared sharply at PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino and appeared to snub a handshake as he came off. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner, who is still chasing his first PSG goal in his third appearance following his shock move from Barcelona, sat glum-faced on the bench.

With the victory, PSG have gone to the top of the table with 18 points in six matches. They are yet to lose a single league game.
