Lionel Messi will join Major League Soccer club Inter Miami after his contract expires with Paris Saint Germain this month, the football legend told Mundo Deportivo on Wednesday. The deal should boost Argentina’s chances at the 2024 Copa America and 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Messi will turn 36 years old this month. By the time, if he chooses to continue playing, the former Barcelona player participates in the 2026 World Cup he will be 39. However, he has not indicated retirement.

The Argentine No 10’s two-year stint with PSG ends this month. The Ligue 1 club has already announced his departure. Messi reportedly had offers from Inter Miami, Saudi club Al-Hilal and his boyhood team Barcelona and he has made a choice.

“I have made the decision that I am going to Miami … a few things are needed, but well, we decided to continue my path there. After winning the World Cup and not being able to return to Barcelona, it was my turn to go to the … United States to live football in another way and to enjoy the day-to-day more,” Messi told Mundo Deportivo on Wednesday.

Messi moved to PSG back in 2021. The team is sponsored by Qatar Airways. Fans speculated that the 35-year-old wanted to go with the French giants only to prepare for the 2022 World Cup, which took place in Qatar.

Now, with Leo Messi going to the US, which hosts Copa America and FIFA World Cup, fans suspect that he is practicing for the two events and will play.

“2021: Qatar sponsored PSG sign Messi before 2022 World Cup in Qatar. 2023: USA Club Inter Miami sign Messi before 2026 World Cup in USA,” a Twitter user noted.

“Messi joined PSG in 2021. Qatar hosted the World Cup in 2022 and he won. Messi joins Inter Miami in 2023. Copa America 2024 and World Cup 2026 is in the USA…” another one added.
