Liverpool on Sunday night completed the paperwork required to complete their €100 million acquisition of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, whose arrival at Merseyside is expected to be announced in the coming hours.

After a week of speculation about Nunez’s move to Liverpool, the Reds officially moved for the Uruguayan striker a couple of days ago, after agreeing to personal terms with the 22-year-old, completing the signing on Sunday.

The €100 million deal – €80 million plus €20 million in add-ons – eclipses Liverpool’s record acquisition of Dutch centre-back Virgil Van Dijk for €84.65 million.

As per the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano, Nunez has signed a six-year deal with the Reds that will keep him at Merseyside till 2028.

The imminent announcement of Nunez in Liverpool colours will mark the Reds’ first major summer signing: Liverpool had earlier completed their move for Fulham‘s Portuguese wonderkid Fabio Carvalho.

Nunez, just 22, scored a whopping 34 goals in 41 appearances for Benfica last season, and averaged more expected non-penalty goals (non-penalty xG) per 90 than any other striker in Europe’s top six leagues, even more than the prolific Robert Lewandowski and Manchester City’s latest acquisition, goal-machine Erling Haaland, who scored 85 goals in 88 appearances for Borussia Dortmund.

While Nunez certainly has the numbers for one season, his €100 million price tag may well raise eyebrows, given the fact that he isn’t proven in the Premier League. Neither does Nunez have the credentials of Haaland, who produced insane numbers in three back-to-back seasons in the Bundesliga.

That being said, Liverpool’s signings thus far have been on point, regardless of the price paid for players: be it Liverpool’s £8 million acquisition of full-back Andrew Robertson, or their £36.5 million move for Mohamed Salah, or their record £75 million acquisition of Van Dijk, Jurgen Klopp has managed to build a team of champions who have gone on to win the Premier League and the Champions League, among other honours.

Nunez’s addition is expected to add to Klopp’s catalogue of extraordinary talents.
