As the English football season returns with the curtain-raiser Community Shield, fans across the world are excited to see two of their favourite teams battle it out. The Community Shield final, which is slated to take place on July 30, will see FA Cup winners Liverpool FC take on Premier League winners from last season, Manchester City.

While the prospectus of a match between Liverpool and Manchester City is always positive and highly anticipated, this game will also earn the fans bragging rights as they go into the season. These two teams were in the hunt for the Premier League title till the end of the last season, with Manchester City rising to the occasion and winning it.

However, Liverpool will certainly try to win the Premier League once again this season, with a bolstered squad, something that Manchester City have also done in the transfer window. The 2022 edition of the shield will also be the 100th edition of the prestigious shield.

Liverpool FC

The Reds are the third-highest winners of the century-old Community Shield. Liverpool has won the shield 15 times, behind Manchester United (21) and Arsenal (16). A win over Manchester City on July 30 will help them equalise Arsenal’s record of winning it 16 times, something that they will certainly look forward to.

Their first-ever victory at the Community Shield final came in 1964. Since then, they have won the title 14 more times, the most recent of which came 16 years ago.

If Liverpool emerges victorious in the 2022 shield final against Manchester City, it will be their first win at the competition since 2006.

Manchester City

The Cityzens have won the Community Shield six times, 15 times less than table toppers Manchester United, who are also their cross-town rivals. They have also won the trophy nine times less than Liverpool, whom they will be facing at the final of the 100th edition.

Manchester City’s first-ever win at the Community Shield came in 1937, 27 years before Liverpool won it. However, they have failed to be more consistent over the last century, winning it two more times. The rest of their three wins at the Community Shield came in the ongoing century, with the last time being in 2019.
