Manchester City on Friday completed their expected signing of English midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Leeds, who is expected to fill the shoes of departing veteran Fernandinho.

The 26-year-old was spotted in Manchester on Friday ahead of his medical, and on Saturday, transfers guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Phillips had completed all remaining formalities with the Citizens.

The English midfielder is joining City for a fee believed to be in the range of £45-50 million, while 18-year-old Darko Gyabi of City will join Leeds for a reported fee of £7 million.

Phillips, who broke into top-flight English football from Leeds’ academy, made a name for himself under former manager Marcelo Bielsa, producing consistent defensive performances that caught Pep Guardiola‘s eye.

With the brilliant Spanish tactician expressing his interest in Phillips, the midfielder reportedly snubbed offers from at least two other clubs, determined to play under Guardiola.

The 26-year-old is the latest player to join City, who have been on quite the shopping spree this summer and have already brought in four players. Reports further suggest that Guardiola is also eyeing Brighton full-back Marc Cucurella.

Having won the Premier League in four of his five seasons at Manchester, Guardiola appears to have set his eyes on the Champions League, a trophy that has eluded him for more than a decade now.

To that end, Guardiola has brought in goal-machine Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. While City were never lacking in terms of their offensive threat or goal potential, the acquisition of Haaland, who netted 86 times in 89 appearances for Dortmund, promises to take the Citizens to another level.
