Defending Premier League (PL) champions, Manchester City, have reached an agreement with Belgian club Anderlecht about signing their star left back, Segio Gomez, on a four-year contract for a sum of £11 million. While it was earlier believed that the Cityzens would loan out the 21-year-old, their gaffer, Pep Guardiola, has confirmed that the club has no such intentions at the moment.

City have been faring well by using Joao Cancelo in the left-back position post the arrest of Benjamin Mendy on accusations of multiple sexual assaults. However, Gomez is more natural to the position, having put up an impressive performance in the previous season for Anderlecht, playing 39 matches in the league where he scored on six occasions and provided 11 assists.

Here is a tweet from the club announcing their new signing:

Guardiola’s preference for Gomez can stem from the fact that just like the former Barcelona captain, the latter is also a product of the club’s youth academy, La Masia. Subsequently, Gomez played a couple of matches for Borussia Dortmund before being loaned out to Huesca. In 2021, Dortmund sold the player to Anderlecht.

Notably, Gomez was adjudged the second best player of the 2017 U-17 World Cup, where he represented runners-up Spain. The player of the tournament was also a Manchester City talent- midfielder Phil Foden.

The youngster also sounded excited about his transfer as he said, “City are the best team in England and in Pep Guardiola I have a chance to learn and develop under the most outstanding manager in world football”.

Manchester City will fly to Newcastle on Monday, August 21, for their next PL match of the season. The defending champions have strengthened their squad further with a number of key signings of the season, most notably, Erling Halaand from Borussia Dortmund. The transfer window is set to close on September 1.
