Manchester United star player Cristiano Ronaldo will not be playing the scheduled game against Liverpool on Tuesday, his football club announced. Ronaldo, along with his partner Georgina Rodriguez, announced the death of one of his newborn twins.

“We can confirm that he will not feature in the match against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday”, a statement from the Red Devils read, hours before the match was scheduled to start.

“Family is more important than everything and Ronaldo is supporting his loved ones at this immensely difficult time,” the statement read. The English football club also requested people to respect the privacy of Cristiano Ronaldo and his family.

The couple announced the death of their baby in an emotional social media post on Monday. “It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you”, the post read.

Manchester United was all set to take on Liverpool, currently at the second position on the points table. United, on the other hand, was in the fifth spot and three points short of third-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

While fans expected Ronaldo to be missing in action in the game against Liverpool on Tuesday, other clubs and sports personalities extended support for the Manchester United star player. 

Soon after Ronaldo shared the news on his social media handles, Liverpool FC wrote, “All of us here at Liverpool FC send our deepest condolences to you, Georgina and the family.”

The Premier League wrote, “The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the Premier League are with you and your family, Cristiano.”

Ronaldo’s former club Real Madrid also released a statement and wrote that the club “deeply regrets the death of one of the children that our beloved Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner, Georgina Rodríguez, were expecting.”

It added, “Real Madrid joins the pain of the whole family and wants to show them all our love and affection.”
