Marcus Ericsson, defending Indy 500 champion, was overtaken by Josef Newgarden on the last lap of the 2023 race. The former Formula 1 driver came second.

Newgarden was ecstatic. He jumped out of his car on the home straight and hopped through a gap in the fence to celebrate with his fans. The 32-year-old is a two-time IndyCar champion and Sunday marked his first Indy 500 win.

Speaking to NBC Sports, Newgarden said: “I have always wanted to go into the crowd here in Indianapolis. This was a dream of mine.”

Ericsson, on the other hand, was clearly frustrated. He slammed the race’s one-lap green flag finish. He said it was ‘unfair and dangerous’.
