India on Monday sealed the second Test match to win the series 1-0 versus New Zealand. Win the triumph, Virat Kohli and company leapfrogged the Kiwis to go on top of the Test rankings. 

Riding on Mayank Agarwal’s brilliance with the bat and Ravichandran Ashwin’s eight-wicket match haul, India won the Mumbai Test by 372 runs. The margin of victory is India’s highest ever on home soil.

“I think it was good to finish the series as winners, came close in Kanpur, not able to get that last wicket, had to work hard here. This result seems one-sided, but right through the series, we were made to work hard,” India coach Rahul Dravid said after the demolition act.

“There have been phases where we were behind and had to fight back, credit to the team. Great to see the boys stepping up and taking their opportunities,” he added.

Opener Mayank Agarwal set the foundation for the win by playing a 150-run knock in the first innings and 62 in the second. Owing to his efforts the hosts had set a mammoth 540-run target for New Zealand in the final innings. 

The Kiwis lost half of their side on Day 3. tarting the day at 140 for five, they were rocked by Jayant Yadav’s lethal spell. The spinner, who had not looked in good rhythm on the third evening, suddenly found his mojo with a career-best spell of 14-4-49-4 having last played a Test match in 2017.

Several current and former cricketers took to Twitter on Monday and lauded Team India on registering a famous win.

“Resounding win for India in their own backyard, comprehensively outclassed New Zealand on a track with turn and bounce. Complete all-round effort with Mayank and Ashwin leading the way, one does feel for history-maker Ajaz,” former India batter VVS Laxman wrote on Twitter.

“Well done Team India. Another comprehensive win at home. Many positives in the test match , but the best was to see Mayank Agarwal back at his best,” former India opener Virender Sehwag tweeted.

“Top series win and what a fantastic performance from the boys. Absolutely brilliant,” Kuldeep Yadav said.

“A solid performance at the Wankhede. Proud of the boys as they win the game and the series with the biggest our ever victory in Test Cricket, by runs @BCCI,” Rishabh Pant tweeted. 

“Congratulations and well deserved boys,” veteran batter Shikhar Dhawan wrote.

India are now scheduled to play a three-match Test series, starting December 26 and a three-match ODI series in South Africa.
