The second game in AL Championship Series between Boston and Houston Astros on Saturday, wasn’t much of a contest as within the first two innings, the Red Sox posted two grand slams, becoming the first team to do so in a postseason game. Following the heroics from J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers, the Boston side won the game 9-5 and tied the series at 1-1.

Martinez opened the scoring to make it 4-0 and went with two outs in the first inning with his shot off rookie Luis Garcia, who later got injured and left the game. It was the first career playoff slam for the four-time All-Star, who began his career with the Astros.

Furthermore, Devers doubled the lead with his slam that sailed just fair against Jake Odorizzi with one out in the second after Garcia exited with right knee discomfort.

It’s the fourth time in major league history, including the regular season, that a team hit a grand slam in both the first and second innings. The Red Sox have done it twice, also on Aug. 7, 1984.

The Los Angeles Dodgers did it this season on May 2, and the first team to do it was Baltimore on May 9, 1961.

Meanwhile, Kike Hernandez, dubbed “en fuego” by Boston manager Alex Cora following a two-homer effort in Game 1, was still on fire on Saturday. He went 2-for-2 with a single home run in the fourth inning.

Hernandez has been the hottest hitter in the postseason, with 16 hits, five home runs, and four doubles to lead all players. His nine extra-base hits are also a postseason record for the Red Sox, tied with Mike Lowell (2007), Kevin Youkilis (2007), and David Ortiz (2007). (2004 & 2007).

In the first game, the Astros captured a 5-4 win as they rallied behind homers from Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa before falling into the huge hole early in this one.

Next, Game 3 is Monday night in Boston. It’s the first of three consecutive home games for the Red Sox, back in the playoffs for the first time since winning the 2018 World Series after downing Houston in the ALCS.
