Thanks to a home run from Max Muncy in the 10th inning, Los Angeles Dodgers clinched a narrow 7-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday to remain in the thick of the NL West chase.

Muncy, the Dodgers infielder, drilled a slider from Lucas Gilbreath (2-2) to deep centre, setting off a roar from the Dodgers faithful scattered throughout Coors Field.

Muncy’s 35th home run of the season ended Gilbreath’s 17-game shutout streak in the ninth inning. Trea Turner knotted the game with a two-run RBI single with two outs.

Blake Treinen recorded his sixth save after getting C.J. Cron to hit into a game-ending double play. Kenley Jansen (4-4) won the victory by pitching the ninth inning.

With time running out in their pursuit for a seventh consecutive NL West title, the Dodgers needed a comeback win. The Los Angeles Dodgers were two games behind the San Francisco Giants, who were at San Diego. After Thursday, both clubs have nine games left.

In the ninth inning, Carlos Estévez got two fast outs before Mookie Betts singled and Corey Seager doubled off his right leg. Estévez stayed in the game and gave up the single to Turner after a few warmup throws.

Max Scherzer struggled in his fifth inning, surrendering five runs. Turner, who was acquired from Washington along with Scherzer on July 30, absolved the right-hander of his first defeat with the Dodgers.

Since May 30, the three-time Cy Young Award winner hasn’t lost.

It’s been unusual to see Scherzer surrender runs. He has only allowed one unearned run in his previous five appearances.

Julio Uras, Walker Buehler, and Max Scherzer combined to give up 14 runs in the three-game series against Colorado. The Dodgers’ starting rotation entered the season with the best ERA, WHIP, and opponents’ average in the majors.

The Rockies were one out away from winning their first series against the Dodgers at Coors Field since August of last year.

After a shaky start, Kyle Freeland settled down, pitching six innings and allowing three runs. The southpaw was just as effective at the plate, tying the game at 3-3 with a two-out, two-run single against Scherzer in the third inning.
