The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed two-time Golden Glove award winner Joey Gallo in a deal with the New York Yankees. This comes after the team missed out in a trade to land outfielder Juan Soto, who ultimately went to the San Diego Padres.

Trading for Gallo means that the Dodgers had to include Clayton Beeter, a pitching prospect who is two years into the league, in the deal.

Joey Gallo’s stint with the New York Yankees ended after just one and a half seasons. He was traded, along with Joely Rodriguez, in the summer of 2021 to the Yankees from the Texas Rangers for 4 players mainly Josh Smith and Glen Otto.

The slugger was coming off a second-career All-Star nod and registered a .223/.379/.490 line with 25 home runs in 95 games for the Rangers in the 2020 season. The Yankees trade for Gallo proved to be a disappointment, despite him being awarded the Golden Glove award in the 2021 season. After being traded last year, the 28-year-old struggled to a.160/.303/.404 line in 58 games. He still hit 13 home runs for the Yankees, but his batting average and on-base percentage dropped by 70 points. The team kept the player in the hopes that he would improve in the 2022 season, but the opposite happened. His numbers dropped, as he only hit 12 home runs in 82 games.

The slugger is in the final year of his contract, he signed with his former team and will be eligible for free agency next season. He’s making $10.275M this year, about $3.7M of which has yet to be paid. The Dodgers will be responsible for the remainder of that money.

Gallo has hit 170 home runs in 708 games during his career. In 2017, he set a career-high with 41. He made All-Star appearances in 2019, and 2021 while winning the Golden Glove award in 2020 and 2021.
