The  San Francisco Giants have signed the third baseman, J.D Davis and minor-league pitchers Thomas Szapucki, Nick Zwack and  Carson Seymour in exchange for outfielder/first baseman,  Darin Ruf to the New York Mets.

Ruf has a .701 OPS with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs in 90 games for the Giants this season. He is making $3M this season, with about $1M left over, which now will be paid by the Mets. He also has a $3.5m club option for the next season with a potential $250k in a buyout.

Ruf, 36, had a great career with the Giants that lasted from 2020 to this day, slashing.248/.358/.455 with 32 home runs and 99 RBIs in 247 games. 

J.D. Davis has seen limited game time with the Mets after a strong 2019 season where he slashed for 22 home runs and 57 RBIs and had 307/.369/.527 (137 OPS+) splits. This season, he hit 238/.324/.359 with just four home runs and 21 RBIs in 66 games.  Szapucki has appeared in two MLB games. Seymour and Zwack were both ranked among the Mets’ top 30 prospects.

Darin Ruf started his career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2012 and played with the team for four seasons. He was then moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Howie Kendrick (NCLS MVP and World Series Champion with the Washington National in 2019) Later, he was shipped to the Samsung Lions in the Korean Baseball Organization. Ruf played for the team for two years and came back to sign with the San Francisco Giants in 2020 for a one-year deal.

Ruf was signed to a one-year, $1.275 million contract extension by the Giants for the 2021 season. He batted.271/.385/.519 with 16 home runs and 43 RBIs in the 2021 regular season. Ruf signed a two-year, $6.25 million contract with the Giants on March 22, 2022.
