Rohit Sharma struggled throughout IPL 2022, his worst season ever. For the first time in the tournament’s history, the Mumbai Indians skipper failed to score a single half-century in a season. In his team’s win against the Delhi Capitals on Saturday, the 35-year-old made two runs in 13 balls.

Sharma finished IPL 2022 with 248 runs at an average of 19.14 and a strike rate of 120.17 in 14 outings. The Mumbai Indians, the first side to be eliminated, remained at the bottom of the points table with four wins and nine losses.

The swashbuckling opener is likely to be rested, along with several regular players, for the T20 series against South Africa. India will then tour England for one Test, three ODIs and as many 20 over games. The T20 World Cup in October-November, in Australia, is Rohit Sharma’s biggest assignment yet as the team’s full-time captain.

Him coming into form is crucial.

Talking about his road back to finding his lazy touch again, Rohit Sharma, after Mumbai’s win against Delhi, said that he is just one “minor adjustment” away. The MI captain is disappointed but wants to focus more on the mental aspect.

“A lot of things that I wanted to do didn’t happen. I am very disappointed with me season. But this has happened with me earlier as well, so it’s not something I am going through for the first time. I know cricket doesn’t end here; there is a lot of cricket ahead. So I need to take care of the mental aspect and think about how I can return to form and perform,” Sharma said.

“It’s only a minor adjustment and I will try to work on that whenever there is some time off,” he added.

MI, five-time IPL champions, started their IPL 2022 campaign with  eight consecutive losses. All their four wins came in the second half of the season.

Rohit Sharma has time and again said that it is important for the team to build a strong playing 11 for next year. In Tilak Varma, Dewald Brevis, Tim David, Daniel Sams and Hrithik Shokeen, Mumbai have already found some new talent this season. With Jofra Archer’s addition, they will look like a much dangerous side in IPL 2023.

“It was a bit of a disappointing season for us as we couldn’t execute our plans at the start of the tournament. And we know that in tournaments like the IPL, you have to build that momentum. Initially, when we kept losing games one after another, that was a difficult time. For us, what was important was to make sure that whatever we had planned, we came out and tried those things. It didn’t happen exactly the way we wanted to,” the India skipper said.

“But it happens sometimes when you have a new team as some players take some time to understand their roles. Certain guys were playing for the first time for this franchise.

“And they play different roles when they play for their country, for their state, or in different leagues. And when they come here, they get different roles. So it takes a little time to get adjusted.”
