The Golden State Warriors are currently the flavour-of-the-day, or rather the flavour of the decade- after winning their fourth NBA championship in just 8 years last night.

This victory has arguably been their most impressive, considering the happenings of the last couple of seasons. The Golden Dynasty of the Warriors, with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green at its heart, has been nearing the end of its cycle. In fact, they had even been written off in many quarters, after they were a league-worst 15–50 in 2019.

However, instead of playing to this narrative, the Warriors, or the ‘Dubs’ as they’re lovingly called by their fans, became the first team ever to get from holding the NBA’s worst record all the way to winning the NBA championship within a three-year span, and they did it in style- becoming only the second away team ever to win the NBA at TD Garden- the home of the Boston Celtics

So how exactly did the record-breaking Warriors get the “Dubs” nickname?

Well, it’s quite straightforward actually! Fans love to shorten the names of their teams as a way to refer to them affectionately. While the Golden State Warriors are called the Warriors in short, this particular nickname might not always make the cut; perhaps it’s still a bit of a mouthful, or perhaps it still isn’t affectionate enough for some!

And so some fans decided to take the pronunciation of the first alphabet (W) of their nickname- Warriors, and shorten it, thus ending up with the friendly, relatable four-letter nickname the “Dubs”! Yes, that’s how simple it is. In fact, it is pretty similar to how the Boston Celtics are called the “Celts”, or “C’s”

So there you have it- this is how the Golden State Warriors, the current NBA Champions have gotten the nickname of the “Dubs”!
