NBA side San Antonio Spurs are signing Doug
McDermott on a three-year, $42 million contract, media reports in the US said.

McDermott has been with the Indiana Pacers for
the past three seasons after signing with them in 2018 free agency. Now, he
will join a Spurs team that sorely needs his skillset as it attempts to retool
and make its way back into the postseason, the Athletic reported.

The Spurs attempted the fewest 3-pointers in
the entire NBA last season at 28.4 per game. This is a relatively frequent
feature of the Gregg Popovich attack style at the Spurs as he favours a
mid-range attack built around DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge.

McDermott is going to change that. He is a
prolific shooter who has hit 40.7% of his long-range attempts in his career.
While saying that, we also saw last season that he started to add to his game
by shooting a career-best 64.1% on 2-pointers and hauling in a career-high 3.3
rebounds per game.

In free agency, the Spurs still have
significant room of maneuverability to either add more free agents or retain
some of their own. With DeMar DeRozan, Patty Mills and Rudy Gay on the open
market, the Spurs can significantly reshape their roster this offseason.

In the season gone by, the Spurs won just
thirty three games of their seventy two games of the season. The team lost
thirty nine games in 2020-21, finishing third in the Western Conference, Southwest
division.
