The All-Star was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome during his 2006-07 rookie season with the Portland Trail Blazers. It is a condition in which an extra electrical pathway between your heart’s upper and lower chambers causes a rapid heartbeat.
It flared up again in 2011 and then in 2017 but something was different on April 10, 2021. He was fine on the offence against the Los Angeles Lakers but Andre Drummond scored a one on one against him and Aldridge knew his heart was behaving erratically. It was his last game and he retired.
But if he had played with the condition all his career then what happened that day?

“Say you have something wrong with you, and then they say ‘A, B and C is going to happen. B should take care of A and C should take care of B, so it’s a way to get out of it,” Aldridge explained on Media Day, according to NY Daily News.
“So if you have this checklist in your mind of something you’ve dealt with your whole career and how to get out of it, and you do all three of those things and you don’t get out of it, then you start freaking out. ‘OK, like, this is what I’ve kind of learned and what I’ve been taught. This is how I fix what’s going on.’ So that night, A, B and C weren’t working for me. So I was like, what is this?” he explained further.
So he retired because it was something he had never experienced and it seemed out of control. But when he got to know that it would be fine, he decided to come back.
He passed the tests with flying colors. Then came his agent and then he came out of retirement and set his heart on returning to Brooklyn.

“I wasn’t ready to stop for one, and two, I was helping — I’m biased — I was helping the best team in the NBA win games and I was fitting in well and I was having fun and I was enjoying basketball. So that’s why. I still love the game. I’m still capable of helping this team win. I still can bring something to the table. So that’s why. I still love the game and I want to play,” he said.
