Manchester United continued their winning run in the pre-season as they defeated Melbourne Victory 1-4 on July 15. The Red Devils trailed after conceding an early goal by Chris Ikonomidis in the fifth minute, however, made a comeback by scoring four times to beat the Australian side.

After the game, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag spoke to MUTV about what he felt regarding his side’s performance in the match. The tactician hailed Melbourne’s gameplay and admitted it was hard for his side to create chances. However, he also felt the Red Devils reacted well and received their reward by the victory.

“A really compact opponent,” he said about Melbourne.

“It was difficult for us to create chances. I think the team reacted really good, especially on the right side. We got our reward when we turned it around,” he added.

After scoring an early goal, Melbourne looked to take a defensive approach to the game. While low block teams have been the Achilles heel for United in the previous season, it was not repeated on Friday night.

“I would say against opponents who are also coming forward, sometimes it’s easier. But when opponents are that far back, you have to invest in running, opposite running, more ball control and also intelligence to create something,” the Dutchman quipped.

While Manchester United won the game, Ten Hag was adamant on the need for more improvement. He indicated a loan deal for a few players and even hinted on permanent outgoing transfers away from Old Trafford.

“I want to have an impression from all the players and give them the chance to show what they’re capable of, if they can contribute, maybe to Man United or a loan period is better, there’s also other possibilities. It’s good that United have some talents but we need improvement and we need development,” he concluded.

Manchester United face Premier League rivals Crystal Palace in their next friendly on July 19 in Melbourne.
