Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Jake Matthews and his wife Meggi Matthews became parents for the first time on Thursday Night. The Falcons’ player was seen entering the Bank of America Stadium in a T-shirt and flip-flops.
Is Matthews related to NFL Hall of Famer, Bruce Matthews and former player Clay Matthews?
Jake is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer, Bruce Matthews who was a 14-time Pro-Bowl player along with being a Seven-time First team.
He is also the cousin to former Green Bay Packers‘ linebacker Clay Matthews III.
In American football, the Matthews family is well-known. Its seven former NFL players have amassed a total of 25 Pro Bowl invites, 11 first-team All-Pro selections, three Super Bowl appearances, but no championships.
Bruce has seven children, including five sons, Kevin and Jake, both of whom have played in the NFL. From 2010 to 2014, Kevin played center for the Tennessee Titans, Washington Redskins, and Carolina Panthers. Since the Falcons selected Jake with the sixth overall pick in the 2014 Draft, he has played offensive tackle for the team.
He and the Falcons defeated his cousin Clay III and the Packers in the NFC championship game of the 2016–17 NFL playoffs to advance to Super Bowl LI. Mike, the third brother, has spent time on the off-season rosters of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns. All three of his brothers played for the Texas A&M Aggies, and the fourth brother, Luke, is a sophomore.
Troy Niklas, a former tight end for the Arizona Cardinals and currently a free agent, is Bruce Matthews’ nephew through his wife’s sister.
With a three-year, $52.5 million contract currently in place, Matthews is the sixth highest-paid offensive lineman in the league, earning $18.5 million annually.
Carolina lead Atlanta 13-3 at the end of the first half, thanks to a 41-yard touchdown from wide receiver Lavishka Shenault Jr.
