Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has suggested that talks for a contract extension with the team have been going on and that if a new deal is not reached before the commencement of the new season, he would stop the negotiations.

Speaking after the conclusion of Saturday’s practice, the 2019 NFL MVP affirmatively said that he would halt any contract talks with the team before their Week-1 clash against the New York Jets.

When asked if he had a deadline for the contract extension, Jackson said, “We’re coming up to it. It’s coming up,” “The season’s coming up. We’re going to be good for the season.”

He was asked if he thought that it was fair to settle the deal before the first match of the new season. Jackson responded,” “Yeah, for sure.”

Lamar Jackson does not have an agent and he represents himself in all of his deals. Jackson has shown why he deserves a big contract extension. Over his short career, he has already won an NFL MVP award (2019), made an All-Pro team and appeared in two Pro Bowls Since drafting Jackson, the Ravens have made the playoffs in three of the last four seasons.

Jackson is aiming to get paid somewhere in the range of Deshaun Watson‘s contract of $230 million guaranteed. Many believe that Jackson deserves more than this amount as he is more accomplished than Watson. Recently Kyler Murray of Arizona Cardinals also signed an extension worth $230.5 million, but with $160 million in guaranteed amount.

He can also have the biggest annual salary if he signs a more lucrative deal. The current record is held by Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, who this past off-season signed an extension with the team that gives him $50 million annually for the next three seasons.

Both the parties, Ravens and Lamar Jackson have less than a month to figure out a new deal, as the Ravens take on the New York Jets at Metlife Stadium on September 11, 2022.
