Rookie Zach Wilson is set to return to the practice field this week for the New York Jets, the coach said on Monday. But whether the quarterback starts on Sunday has yet not been confirmed.

During the second quarter of New York’s 54-13 loss to New England, Wilson was injured when he was hit by Patriots linebacker Matt Judon, who fell on the back of the quarterback’s legs after he threw an incomplete pass.

Since then Wilson has missed two games with a sprained posterior collateral ligament in his right knee, leaving backup Mike White to start in his place.

That way, the starter can get all of the snaps with the first-team offence during preparations. And while there’s a possibility it could be Wilson, it appears likely White will get a third start.

However, coach Robert Saleh on Monday confirmed the team will decide by Wednesday’s practice who will start the home game Sunday against Buffalo.

Talking about Wilson’s health, Saleh said, “We’ll see how he is.”

“We’ll see how it looks, but we’re not in any hurry to rush him back because of the fact that this is a two-to-four-week injury. He’s going into Week 3 and there are a couple of hurdles that he has to pass yet,” he further added.

Despite his early-season problems and White’s brief success as his fill-in, the Jets don’t want to take any needless chances with the No. 2 overall selection, who remains the franchise’s future in their eyes.

In the days leading up to the Jets’ first practise of the week, Saleh admitted that the club was taking a cautious approach and that the organisation was “waiting for more updates” on Wilson’s knee.

“If he’s not fully healthy,” Saleh said, “it would be irresponsible for us to throw him out there.”

But the coach didn’t hesitate to assure that if Wilson was fully fit he would regain his quarterback spot right away.

“Yeah, if he’s fully healthy, for sure,” Saleh said.
