In a massive blow to the San Francisco 49ers (3-5), their right tackle Mike McGlinchey will miss the rest of the season with a torn quadriceps. The 2018 first-round pick suffered the injury during Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Because fifth-round rookie Jaylon Moore had largely practised on the left side, veteran Tom Compton filled in for McGlinchey on Sunday. Both players, as well as right guard Daniel Brunskill, who has played tackle in the past, are alternatives, according to coach Kyle Shanahan.

Since being picked ninth overall in 2018, McGlinchey has started 52 of 56 games. He was a critical member of the Super Bowl-winning squad in 2019, but he struggled in pass protection last season.

He was much better in 2020, but he’ll be out for the rest of the season, along with other crucial players like running back Raheem Mostert and cornerback Jason Verrett, who both suffered season-ending knee injuries in the season opener.

“I thought Mike was doing a hell of a job coming off of last year,” Shanahan said, according to Associated Press inputs. “We saw some really good things from Mike his first two years. I think he knows and we all know he had a setback in his third season last year, struggled at times. He put in the work in the offseason. I thought he had a much better year getting back to playing more how he did in his second year.”

McGlinchey’s fifth-year option was picked up by the Niners, and he will earn around $10.9 million next season.

In other injury news, Shanahan reports that receiver Mohamed Sanu damaged his knee and will be gone for some time. Safety Tavon Wilson (foot) might be placed on injured reserve, while CB Josh Norman (rib) is limited and Dre Kirkpatrick (ankle) is questionable.
