Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker rewrote NFL history on Sunday when he broke the record for the longest field goal in the league’s history with a 66-yard kick in a dramatic 19-17 victory against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

With the feat, Tucker has established himself as one of the top kickers in the history of the game, but let’s take look at the complete list of longest field goals in the league’s history.

Justin Tucker (66 yards)

As mentioned earlier, Tucker is currently the record holder with his audacious hit against the Lions.

With just seven seconds left on the clock, Raves QB Lamar Jackson completed a 36-yard pass to Sammy Watkins, and then was able to spike the ball.

Tucker fired a kick down the centre that struck the crossbar and rebounded off the crossbar for the victory, setting off a frenzied celebration on the field as the Ravens trumped the Lions.

Matt Prater (64 yards)

For eight long years, Prater alone atop the record books, after his 64-yard kick on a cold December day against Tennessee Titans in 2013. The record-breaking hit came right at the end of the first half. The field goal was part of a 41-7 run the Broncos went on to defeat the Titans, 51-28.

However, Tucker dethroned Prater on Sunday with his hit against the Lions.

Tom Dempsey (63 yards)

While Tucker’s record is quite incredible as it stands but when Tom Dempsey hit a 63-yarder, 51 years ago, it was an audacious attempt to even think about. Before Dempsey’s big boot, the longest made field goal was 56 yards, so even an attempt from the distance was unheard of.

It stood as the longest made field goal for 28 years, and was tied for the longest for another 15.

New Orleans was down, 17-16, to the Detroit Lions and Dempsey stepped in to take a shot at glory. He nailed the game-winner from a record distance and sealed his legacy for the Hall of Fame.

The 63-yard club: There are quite a few kickers over the years who have hit the 63-yard mark over the years. Jason Elam, in 1998, tied Dempsey’s effort with his kick right at the end of the first half in a game against Jacksonville Jaguars.

In 2011, Sebastian Janikowski tied the same record followed by David Akers a year later. In 2018, Graham Gano hit a game-winning 63-yard field goal against the New York Giants.

Dallas Cowboys kicker Brett Maher boots also reached the same figure in 2019.
