Edmonton Oilers have reportedly acquired forward Zach Hyman from the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 29-year-old agreed to a seven-year, $38.5 million contract on Wednesday, a source told the Associated Press. Defenceman Tyson Barri agreed to extend his contract with the Oilers, the report added.

According to the contract, Hyman would earn $5.5 million against the salary cap through the 2026-27 season.

“It’s believed the Oilers offered Toronto two draft picks, including one in the first 5 rounds as compensation for a potential sign and trade. However, the Maple Leafs obviously declined,” TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger tweeted.

There will be some bonus structure included and a no-move clause for the first five years followed by a modified no-move in the last two years, he added.

Hyman comes with brilliant statistics against his name. He topped 20 goals in two of his six seasons with the Maple Leafs. He played at the left-wing for them and scored 15 goals and 33 points in 43 games last season.

“We’ve been in that situation before at the trade deadline, and when you’re in that spot the other GMs aren’t helping you out. They’re pulling the pin from the grenade and they’re throwing it to you. I know that there’s a narrative that we should just get something, but when you’re saving a team significant dollars on the salary cap that comes with a cost and we’re not going to bend on that,” Toronto general manager Kyle Dubas said last weekend.

The Oilers re-signed Barrie. He will return for a second season in Edmonton after he topped 40 points for the fifth time in his 10-year career.

Hyman was drafted 123rd overall by the Florida Panthers in 2010. He was then traded to Toronto in June 2015. The 29-year-old has 86 goals and 185 points in 345 regular-season games with the Maple Leafs and five goals and 13 points in 32 playoff games.
