Robert Lewandowski was named the UEFA men’s player of the year after a superb season in which he won the treble with German giants Bayern Munich.
The Poland striker has scored 55 goals in 47 games as Bayern also won the Bundesliga and German Cup along with the Champions League.
While receiving the award at the Champions League group draw in Geneva, Lewandowski said, “It’s an amazing feeling, because you work so hard, so this trophy is something special. I have to say thank you to my team-mates and coaches who helped me get where I am. Also my family have given me so much support and are so important.”
Had this year’s Ballon d’Or not been cancelled by France Football magazine due to the coronavirus pandemic, Lewandowski would have been a clear favourite to take the award home.
Lewandowski has also won the award for best forward in last season’s Champions League after scoring 15 goals in 10 games. He scored four goals in just 14 minutes against Red Star Belgrade.
His success was not limited to the Champions League as the 32-year-old was also top scorer in the Bundesliga last season with 34 goals, winning the ‘cannon’ award, which is awarded to the player with the highest number of goals in the German top flight, for the fifth time since his arrival at Bayern from rivals Borussia Dortmund in 2014.
