World no. 1 Novak Djokovic went down fighting to Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in the bronze medal playoff at the Tokyo Olympics. The Serbian, who was chasing a Golden Slam, ended his Olympics campaign without a medal. Busta won the three-setter 6-4 7-6 6-3. The match, which was played in sweltering heat, lasted for nearly three hours.

Djokovic has already won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year. He was looking to become the first man in history to complete a Golden Slam – four Grand Slam victories along with an Olympic Gold in a calendar year. His bid ended on Friday when he lost to Alexander Zverev in the semifinal.

The only Olympic medal that Djokovic, a 20-time Grand Slam winner, has in his cabinet is a bronze medal from 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Djokovic has also pulled out of the mixed doubles bronze match at Tokyo Olympics citing a shoulder injury. The Serb also said that he was not sure about his fitness for the upcoming US Open.

The 34-year-old could become the first man to complete a calendar Grand Slam since Rod Laver in 1969 when the US Open gets underway on August 30.

Earlier in the tournament, Djokovic and a lot of other tennis players had questioned the scheduling at Tokyo Olympics, after being forced to play in the sweltering heat. After the bronze medal match, he said that the exertion in Japan did take a toll but he hoped to be fit to launch a bid for the US Open title.

“The consequences physically hopefully will not create a problem for me for the US Open, but that’s something that I’m not sure about right now,” Djokovic said.

“But I’m not regretting for giving it all because at the end of the day, when you play for your country, that’s necessary,” he added.
