Hamlin collapsed on the field after tackling Bengal’s Tee Higgins. The safety seemingly suffered a cardiac arrest as he was given CPR and AED on the field, according to reports. An ambulance was brought onto the field after the injury, and he was taken to the UC Medical Centre, a Level 1 trauma care center near the stadium.
The game between the Bengals and the Bills was suspended and the NFL released a statement announcing the same. They also said that Hamlin is in critical condition and is undergoing treatment.
“Tonight’s Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game has been postponed after Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin collapsed, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced,” the statement said.
“Hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field by the team and independent medical staff and local paramedics. He was then transported to a local hospital where he is in critical condition. Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills.”
“We will provide more information as it becomes available. The NFL has been in constant communication with the NFL Players Association which is in agreement with postponing the game.”
Local reporters tweeted that Bills and Bengals fans gathered at the hospital in solidarity with Hamlin.
Hamlin’s mother, who was at the stadium to watch the game, went to the hospital with him in the ambulance. The safety was spotted clicking selfies with his mother before the game.
