Brazilian legend Pele, one of the greatest footballers of all time, has died at the age of 82.

Confirming the news on Thursday, his daughter, Kely Nascimento, wrote on Instagram, “Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace.”

Pele, who had been battling colon cancer for a while, was diagnosed with colon cancer in September 2021, was hospitalised last month. 

Pele had won three World Cups with Brazil – in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Following his death, several footballers paid tributes on social media. 

“A simple goodbye to the eternal King Pelé will never be enough to express the pain that hits the entire world of football at this moment. An inspiration for so many millions, a reference of yesterday, today, always. The affection he has always shown for me was reciprocal in every moment we shared, even at distance. He will never be forgotten and his memory will last for ever in each and everyone of us football lovers. Rest in peace, King Pelé,” Cristiano Ronaldo, Portuguese soccer star, wrote.

Argentina’s World Cup winner Lionel Messi shared a photo with Pele on Instagram and captioned it, “Rest in peace.”

Kylian Mbappe also paid tribute to the three-time World Cup winner. 

“The king of football has left us but his legacy will never be forgotten. RIP KING,” Mbappe wrote on Instagram.

Neymar paid a touching tribute to Pele on his Instagram account.

“He turned football into art, into entertainment. He gave a voice to the poor, to black people and especially: Gave visibility to Brazil. Soccer and Brazil have raised their status thanks to the King! He is gone, but his magic remains. Pele is ETERNAL!!” Neymar wrote.
