The only Kentucky Derby competitor who will compete in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, 2023, is Mage, as the remainder of the field either avoided Churchill Downs or did not accumulate enough qualifying points. After serving his two-year sentence, legendary trainer Bob Baffert is making a comeback to the Triple Crown series with National Treasure. The 2022 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile’s third-place finisher, National Treasure, is 4-1 in the 2023 Preakness Stakes.

Before moving to the United States in 2014 to pursue his goal of winning America’s most prestigious races, Mage’s trainer, Gustavo Delgado Sr., won three Triple Crowns in Venezuela. “I just wanted to get to the Kentucky Derby, and we did, but this horse, we knew he was very, very good,” said Delgado Sr., who has saddled three horses in the Derby.

As per the latest reports, after being absent from the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs earlier this month, National Treasure, trained by Bob Baffert, won the 148th running of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. This victory gave National Treasure the second jewel in the Triple Crown.

Mage, a horse trained by Gustavo Delgado who came in third, had 7-5 odds to win the Preakness Stakes and was seeking to become the first horse since Justify in 2018 to win both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. In order to become the 13th horse to win the Triple Crown, Justify, trained by Baffert, also triumphed in the 2018 Belmont Stakes.
