The Indian women’s cricket team batter Punam Raut chose to
walk off the field despite the umpire declaring her not out against Australia.

Raut’s decision stunned the spectators watching the game from
the stands in Queensland as well as those rooting for the teams from their
homes.

The incident occurred in the 81st over of India’s
innings, she played Sophie Molineus’s delivery on the front foot when the
Aussies appealed for a caught behind.

The nicely tossed up delivery was believed to have been nicked
by the batter but the umpire was convinced that there was no connection with
the bat and declared Raut not out. The decision was surprising since this is
the sole match of the series.

Punam’s choice sparked the ‘spirit of the game’ debate yet
again. Australian opener Beth Mooney revealed she would not have taken the same
root as Raut while the commentators were unsure of the batter’s decision as
well.

A former Indian wicketkeeper resounded the same and thought it

While a lot can be made of Poonam’s decision, the spotlight
was taken by Smriti Mandhana and deservedly so. The stylish opener hit her
maiden test century – the first by an Indian woman in Australia.
