PV Sindhu, who has won two Olympic medals, was selected on Wednesday to be India’s flagbearer during the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, which will take place here on Thursday. The opening ceremony, which will take place on Thursday, will feature 164 athletes in total.

According to a representative of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Sindhu has been chosen to carry the Indian team’s flag during the opening ceremony.

“The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is delighted to announce shuttler PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, as the Flagbearer of Team India at the Opening Ceremony,” the IOA stated.

“A four-member committee, comprising IOA Acting President Mr Anil Khanna, IOA Secretary General Mr Rajeev Mehta, IOA Treasurer Mr Anandeshwar Panday, and Team India Chef de Mission Mr Rajesh Bhandari, shortlisted the three athletes. Eventually, Mr Khanna and Mr Mehta selected Ms Sindhu as the Flagbearer for the Opening Ceremony,” it further added.

After winning the silver and bronze in the previous two competitions at Gold Coast and Glasgow, Sindhu, a former world champion, is among the favourites to win the women’s singles gold medal in Birmingham.

Additionally, Sindhu carried the flag at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games are rapidly approaching, and Indian athletes appear prepared to display their skills there. The tournament, one of the most prestigious sporting events open to the Commonwealth countries, will feature some of the best athletes in the world, and Indian athletes won’t be left out.

India recently made a 215-member contingent for the competition official. Of the potential 20 events, the Indian contingent will take part in 16. The Indian team consists of 108 men and 107 women as it prepares to make its 18th appearance at the competition. The Indian team features a number of elite athletes, including gold medalists from the Tokyo Olympics Neeraj Chopra and Lovlina Borgohain, among others.
