As India claimed the ODI series against England in Manchester on Sunday after winning the third match, captain Rohit Sharma made a unique record. The 35-year-old surpassed Australian great Michael Bevan in the list of cricketers with most ODI caps.

Sharma made his 233rd appearance in an ODI match against England on Sunday and overtook Bevan’s record of 232. This helped the Indian captain occupy the 56th spot in the list of players with highest ODI caps. The all-time chart is led by Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar, who had made 463 ODI appearances during his long career.

Rohit’s achievement also helped him become the third active player with most ODI caps after teammate Virat Kohli (262) and Mushfiqur Rahim (233) of Bangladesh.

Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut in 2007, became a regular in the Indian ODI team in 2013 and was promoted as the captain in December 2017. He currently captains India in all three formats of the game.

Although Rohit Sharma surpassed Bevan in the list of players with highest ODI caps, he missed out on another record by only two runs. Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin had scored 9378 runs in his ODI career, and Sharma missed the sixth spot by a whisker as he scored 17 runs in the third ODI. His ODI tally currently stands at 9376 runs.

The all-time chart of Indian batters with most ODI runs is led by Sachin Tendulkar, who has amassed 18426 runs in ODI matches and remains the only player with more than 15000 runs in ODI.

Rohit, on the other hand, is not part of the Indian ODI team against West Indies and will most likely not play another ODI till the T20 World Cup.

India face West Indies in three ODI matches next, beginning from Friday, July 22 at the Queen’s Park Oval.
