Fans were furious after the Washington Commanders, ahead of their Week 12 game against the Atlanta Falcons, unveiled a mannequin and not a statue in honour of former safety Sean Taylor. The NFL legend died in 2007 after he was shot during a burglary.

“This is the Sean Taylor “statue” that was just unveiled on the 15th anniversary of his tragic death. Another embarrassing moment for the Washington franchise. Unreal,” a Twitter user said.

“WTF 🤬 no, not a statue for the icon… but a MANNEQUIN for Sean Taylor??” another one added.

“Ain’t no way they just disrespected Sean Taylor like this,” a third one said.

Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post reported that the structure can be moved to Washington’s new stadium, ‘wherever that may be in the near future’.

Taylor’s family, including his daughter Jackie, as they paid a visit to his preserved locker at FedEx Field on Sunday morning.

“We honor and remember Sean Taylor,” the Commanders tweeted.

“When I think of Sean Taylor, it’s much more than the plays that he made on the field,” Commanders cornerback Kendall Fuller said.

“Just the energy, the love, the passion that he brought to this team, that he brought to this community, to this organization and that’s something that I don’t think that anyone can every duplicate again, but it’s something that everybody kind of leans on and something that will always be missed.”

However, fans were not pleased looking at the mannequin.

“This is the Sean Taylor “Statue” that they are unveiling today in Washington. This is simply a mannequin with a ST jersey on. This is beyond embarrassing,” another Twitter user said.

“Sean Taylor was one of the most polarizing athletes to ever grace an NFL field, let alone wear the burgundy and gold. THIS is what the team unveiled today in his honor? A jersey on a mannequin with wire arms and soccer cleats? This is absolutely disgusting,” one more person added.
