Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, alias Sidhu Moose Wala, a Punjab singer-politician, was shot dead on Sunday evening, a day after his protection was reduced, a move that drew harsh criticism from the opposition. The murder of the 28-year-old Congress leader, which has been blamed on inter-gang rivalry, has rocked the state and sparked a new political feud. State police have named Goldy Brar of Canada and incarcerated mobster Lawrence Bishnoi as suspects in the killing. Moosewala, who had only recently joined the Congress, has come under fire for promoting gun culture in his music.

Here are 10 important updates on the political fallout from Sidhu Moose Wala’s murder:

1. The young rapper was killed barely months after joining Congress in preparation for the state elections. In the Mansa district assembly elections, he ran unsuccessfully, losing to AAP’s Dr. Vijay Singla. Dr. Singla was removed from Bhagwant Mann’s cabinet last week after charges of corruption.

2. His protection had been reduced from four armed guards to two by the state administration. During Mann’s tirade against the “VIP culture,” the decision was made for 424 people. “I am Shocked and Deeply saddened by the gruesome murder of Siddhu Moosewala. Nobody involved will be spared. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and his fans across the world. I appeal to everyone to stay calm. (sic),” the chief minister wrote on Twitter.

3. After the assassination, Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted: “Sidhu Moosewala ji was a talented artist who brought laurels to the country and Punjab all over the world. The Aam Aadmi Party government has turned Punjab’s law and order into Jungle Raj and has handed over the security system to political likes and dislikes.”

4. On Sunday evening, shortly after leaving his house, Moose Wala was driving his SUV when two cars appeared from the front, causing mayhem. A surveillance footage shows two automobiles tailing his black SUV.

5. A large police force remained stationed outside the singer’s Mansa district home, where he was assassinated just weeks before his 29th birthday.

6. “It seems to be an inter-gang rivalry case…Lawrence Bishnoi gang is involved in this. Lucky, member of the gang has taken responsibility from Canada,” Punjab DGP VK Bhawra said at a press conference on Sunday evening.

7. Following the tragedy, Punjab Congress chairman Amarinder Singh Warring visited the residence of his party comrade and chastised the police. “Punjab DGP should be ashamed as it is his responsibility to control law and order but he is running away from his responsibility by calling it a gang rivalry. We will go to the high court, and will meet the governor. If we don’t get justice then we’ll also meet Union Home Minister (Amit Shah),” he said, according to news agency ANI.

8. “Why his (Sidhu Moose Wala) security reduced? In two months, 40-45 people lost their lives including a Kabaddi player,” the Punjab Congress chairman enquired.

9. The BJP and the Akali Dal are among those who have condemned the AAP for the killing. “Moose Wala’s death is the result of cheap politics of AAP. Cheap politics of Arvind Kejriwal, who made public the secret list which had names of those whose security had been removed. Kejriwal used to demand that he should be given control of the police; now see what he is doing with it…,” Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who broke down during a press conference, said of the murder.

10. Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the AAP, also advised calm. The death came just months after the party won the state by a landslide. “The murder of Sidhu Moose Wala is very sad and shocking. I just spoke to Punjab CM Mann Sahib. The culprits will be given the harshest punishment. I request everyone to keep calm and maintain peace. May God rest his soul,” Kejriwal said on Twitter.
