In a major cornerback overhaul for the Dallas Cowboys, the Indianapolis Colts have traded Stephon Gilmore, the Pro Bowl cornerback, to the Texas franchise, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported on Tuesday.

Gilmore was on a two-year $23 million contract with the Colts. With one year remaining in his contract, he will now join Dallas for a total of $11.9 million, spread across a $7.96 million base salary, $2 million plus in bonuses, and other costs.

It is evident that the Cowboys will pair him with Trevon Diggs, and Anthony Brown is set to lose his place. Brown has had a few tough years and at the end of the 2022-23 season, he ranked 101st out of 118 cornerbacks.

Here’s an overview of the cornerback’s 2022 season:

Gilmore had a strong 2022-23 season, starting 16 games and intercepting two passes. It made him the top cornerback of the Indianapolis Colts and helped the team to secure important victories against the Chiefs, Broncos and Raiders.

He was also a key member of the defensive unit and helped the younger players in Colt’s dressing room to adapt to the game at the top professional level.

The Colts are letting him leave because they are in a transition period now under coach Shane Steichen. They also will be starting a rookie quarterback this season, making it pointless to retain Gilmore in the mix.

With him joining, the Dak Prescott-led Dallas Cowboys attack will receive a major boost to their AFC East title-winning side.

He has been a consistent performer throughout his career, earning numerous accolades and awards for his play. In 2019, he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, an honor that recognizes the league’s top defensive player.
